Martijn Gerard Garritsen, is better known as Martin Garrix (stylized as Mar+in Garri×). He is a Dutch DJ, record producer and musician. Garrix learned to play guitar at age 8. However, his EDM senses were electrified in 2004, after seeing Tiësto perform at the Olympic games in Athens. He later begin writing and producing music on FL Studio, music production software. Fast forward to 2013, when he graduated from the Herman Brood Academy, a production school in Utrecht.
He had his beginnings with the songs “BFAM” (with Julian Jordan) and “Just Some Loops”, a collaboration with TV Noise that appeared on the compilation album Loop Masters Essential, Volume 2. This was followed by signing to Spinnin’ Records in 2012, releasing “Error 404” through the label.
He gained recognition through his own solo release “Animals” in 2013. This was released on Dutch record label Spinnin’ Records and charted all over Europe. This song propelled him to became the youngest person to reach the No. 1 spot on Beatport. Also in 2013, Garrix released a remix of “Project T” by Sander Van Doorn and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike which quickly hit No. 1 on the Beatport charts. DJ Magazine’s top 100 DJs list placed him as a new entry at 40 on their 2013 list. The next year’s list saw him break the top 10, coming in at 4.
In 2014, Garrix released “Proxy” as a free download. He released a song with MOTi with the title “Virus (How About Now)” which was later in the year as well as his collaboration with Afrojack releasing “Turn Up the Speakers” which Afrojack and Garrix both premiered at Ultra Music Festival.
Garrix, in 2015 started to experimented and explore more progressive house musical styles as well as continuing to develop his signature big room sound. When he reached 10 million FaceBook likes, he released the track “Forbidden Voices” as a gift. Later in the same month, February 2015, he released the single “Don’t Look Down” featuring Usher. Garrix said of working with Usher, that he is a “humble” artist and a great collaborator.
2015 also saw the released two video versions for it on Vevo, “Towel Boy” and “Towel Girl.” The track was written by Garrix, James ‘JHart’ Abrahart and Busbee. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs. He also worked with multi-Grammy winner Ed Sheeran on a track called “Rewind Repeat It” as well as a track with Tiësto, called “The Only Way Is Up”. In May 2015, Avicii released a lyric video of the song “Waiting for Love” which was co-produced by Garrix. July 2015, welcomed the released of the Break Through The Silence EP with Russian DJs Matisse and Sadko.
In late August 2015, Garrix announced that he had spilt from Spinnin’ Records and MusicAllStars Management and that he would create his own record label. Ending 2015 on high, Garrix released “Bouncybob”, for free, which he had co-produced with Justin Mylo and Mesto.
2016 saw the creation of STMPD RCRDS as well as a deal with Sony Music. Garrix continued to release tracks such as “Lions in the Wild” and “Oops”. Accompanied by The Tonight Show’s house band, The Roots, Garrix made his first ever live performance of his own music, with Bebe Rexha on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In October 2016, Garrix took the top spot on DJ Mag’s annual Top 100 DJs poll. And at the age of 20, he became the youngest ever recipient of the award. The award was presented by his mentor and four-times winner of the award, Tiësto at the Top 100 DJs Poll Awards Party in Amsterdam’s famous Heineken Music Hall.
It was announced that Garrix will co-star, alongside Carl Cox in an upcoming EDM documentary titled “What We Started” which explores the 30 year history of EDM. The documentary is co-written, produced and directed by Bert Marcus alongside executive producer and music supervisor Pete Tong.
